Janet Hunter is Saji Emeritus Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She has published widely on the economic and social development of modern Japan and is currently completing a monograph on the Great Kantō Earthquake. Previous publications on this disaster include “‘Extreme Confusion and Disorder’? The Japanese Economy in the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923” (Journal of Asian Studies 2014) and, with K.
