Nikolai Johnsen
Nikolai Johnsen is a scholar of heritage and memory with a focus on the legacies of war and colonialism in East Asia. He is currently a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London. His doctoral research explored the potential of dark tourism to illuminate marginalized narratives of colonialism in South Korea and Japan. Nikolai is currently engaged in a research project investigating transnational advocacy networks that aim to bring attention to marginalized victims of war and colonialism in East Asia. An avid traveller, Nikolai has work experience leading tours to North Korea and Japan. He is the author of a two-part article on “Kato Koko’s Meiji Industrial Revolution – Forgetting forced labor to celebrate Japan’s World Heritage” in The Asia-Pacific Journal.
