Critical Asian Scholarship in a Time of Global Crisis

Ongoing series showcasing perspectives on Critical Asian Scholarship in a Time of Global Crisis.

In this time of dynamic political and social change around the world, and in anticipation of the 25th anniversary of APJJF in 2027, we have embarked on a serious campaign of reflection and anticipation; making sure we are continuing to be true to our journal mission while making concrete plans for the sustainability of the journal and effective service to both our authors and readers.

Part of this is the envisioning of a new online exclusive series, where we’ve asked long-time contributors and supporters to share with us how they conceive of critical Asian scholarship today, how their careers have engaged with this work, and how they perceive of APJJF as being part of these efforts. We open the series with an interview with Glen S. Fukushima, an academic, businessman, and philanthropist, who has provided APJJF with a large-scale donation in 2025 and a matching fund challenge through February 28, 2026.

Critical Asian Scholarship in a Time of Global Crisis is also the name of our APJJF-sponsored roundtable at the 2026 AAS conference in Vancouver. Chaired by Tristan, it will feature contributions by APJJF founding editor, Mark Selden, along with Board of Directors President, Laura Hein, and editorial board members and contributors, Tomomi Yamaguchi and Satoko Oka Norimatsu.

We hope you will enjoy reading these articles and interviews as they are made available through mid-March 2026, and then join us in Vancouver!
