Vicente L. Rafael
Vicente L. Rafael is Professor of History and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is the author of several works on the political and cultural history of the Philippines, including Contracting Colonialism (Duke University Press, 1988), White Love and Other Events in Filipino History (Duke University Press, 2000), The Promise of the Foreign (Duke University Press, 2005), and Motherless Tongues: The Insurgency of Language amid Wars of Translation (Duke University Press, 2016). His most recent book is The Sovereign Trickster: Death and Laughter in the Age of Duterte, published by Duke University and in Manila by Ateneo University Press in 2022.
