Rotem Kowner is Professor of Japanese Studies and Naval History at the University of Haifa, Israel. A founder and first chair of the Department of Asian Studies at the same university, his research interests include wartime behavior in modern Japan, race and racism in East Asia, and modern naval history. During the last two decades, Professor Kowner has written extensively and led joint research projects on the Russo-Japanese War, and in so doing played a major role in bringing this conflict and its global repercussions into historical reconsideration. His major publications on this topic include Tsushima (Oxford University Press, 2022), Historical Dictionary of the Russo-Japanese War (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017); the edited volumes The Impact of the Russo–Japanese War (Routledge, 2007) and Rethinking the Russo-Japanese War (Brill, 2007); as well as the forthcoming article: “The Russo-Japanese War,” in Isabelle Duyvesteyn and Beatrice Heuser (eds), The Cambridge History of Military Strategy, 3 vols. (Cambridge University Press, 2022).
