Jeff Kingston

Jeff Kingston is Professor of History and Asian Studies at Temple University Japan. His recent monographs include Japan in Transformation 1945–2020 (2021), The Politics of Religion, Nationalism and Identity in Asia (2019), Japan (2019) and Nationalism in Asia: A History Since 1945 (2016). He edited Critical Issues in Contemporary Japan (2019) and Press Freedom in Contemporary Japan (2017), and co-edited The Routledge Handbook of Trauma in East Asia (2023), Japan in the Heisei Era (1989–2019) (2022), Press Freedom in Contemporary Asia (2020), Japan’s Foreign Relations with Asia (2018) and Asian Nationalisms Reconsidered (2015). His current research focuses on transitional justice and the politics of memory. He holds a BSFS from Georgetown University and a PhD from Columbia University.
